How to install your child safety seat the right way

This is National Child Passenger Safety Week, an annual campaign with the aim of making parents and caregivers aware of the need to keep kids in appropriate child safety seats in cars. The campaign builds up to National Seat Check Saturday, this September 25th, when trained child-seat technicians will hold events around the country to demonstrate and instruct on the correct installation and use of child seats. This is a valuable opportunity for motorists, as studies have shown that child safety seats are not properly installed more than 80 percent of the time.

New findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that for 2009, an average of four children under age 14 were killed each day and 490 injured. Another new NHTSA study on child seat use found that restraint use for children 1-3 years of age increased to 96 percent from 93 percent in 2008. However, use of booster seats for children 4-7 years old declined 2 percentage points from 2008 to 41 percent and restraint use for all children under 13 remained unchanged.
